Being a part of this project was personally enriching. Telling these women's stories was profoundly moving. The project celebrated the impactful women in our lives, particularly our mothers, echoing the resilience of those who faced struggles, like my grandmother, a migrant to the UK. 'A luta continua!'—'The fight continues'—encapsulates the project's essence, a reminder to persist in the fight for a just future, much like these prosecuted women did during the fascist regime.
As a significant contributor to 'Exile,' I assumed the pivotal role of the cinematographer, infusing each frame with deliberate meaning and emotional resonance. My responsibilities extended beyond conventional cinematography; I meticulously orchestrated the framing of stationary shots, emphasizing the subjects' narratives and conveying the profound impact of their stories. Ensuring the lighting and colours were evocative and authentic from the outset was crucial, considering the documentary's unscripted nature.
Collaborating closely with interviewees in their homes presented unique challenges, requiring tact and adaptability to optimise lighting conditions while respecting the sanctity of their spaces. Although occasionally challenging, the experience was immensely rewarding, as it added an intimate and authentic dimension to our storytelling.
Moreover, 'Exile' served as a personal reflection, evoking the struggles faced by my own family during migration. This personal connection deeply resonated with the documentary's theme, emphasising the strength and resilience of those who faced adversity. I also spearheaded the inclusion of a powerful motto, 'A luta continua!,' encapsulating the ongoing fight for justice and echoing the strength exhibited by the prosecuted women during the fascist regime. This project was not merely about cinematography; it was about amplifying voices, preserving legacies, and empowering narratives that resonate across generations.
'Exile' earned acclaim within our university, winning the award for Best Non-Fiction Film in our graduate showcase. This recognition underscored the film's impact, affirming its relevance and contribution to our academic community.
